Americans have a long history of reveling it our celebrities’ downfalls. Ever heard of Fatty Arbuckle? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roscoe_Arbuckle

I think Americans’ glee in seeing a celebrity punished or destroyed is just the flip side of the cult of celebrity. We love watching them fall even more than we enjoy watching them ascend. What’s more fun, seeing Britney go from the Mousketeers to the “Toxic” stewardess, or from that stewardess to a drunken, pantyless, child-abandoning skank?

Has Paris affected me personally? She affects the younger generation of pubescent girls who look up to her as some sort of woman to idealize. Why? All she has managed to do is become famous for being famous. She has below par intelligence, below par morality from what I have seen, and flaunts her disrespect for herself. The way her fame affects our children affects me. I can point children to look towards Madame Curie, Mother Teresa, Toni Morrison, Golda Meir, and others as women to look up to but in the end, it’s the Paris Hiltons and Britney Spears of the world that garner their admiration because the press continues to push them into our face.

Editors Response: Let’s assume for the sake of argument that she is just “famous for being famous” why is that a reason to hate her? You assert that she has below par intelligence, but how do you know that? I am not saying that Paris Hilton should be everyone’s role model, but the way she is portrayed as the cause of all of societies ills is just over the top.
