Bush Vetoes Children’s Health Insurance Plan

October 3, 2007 · Filed Under U.S. News, White House

President Bush this morning vetoed a bill that would renew and expand the state-federal health insurance program for low-income children, delivering on his threat to block a measure he has said is too costly and could lead to excessive government control of the health-care system.

Democrats wanted to extend coverage of the so-called SCHIP program to include coverage of children with families making up to $80,000 per year. The SCHIP program was originally intended for the low-income families with kids who cannot afford private health coverage.
