Barack Obama finally hit back at Bill Clinton on ABC’s “Good Morning America” calling the former President a liar, but saying it in his usual eloquent fashion.

“I have to say just broadly, you know, the former president, who I think all of us have a lot of regard for, has taken his advocacy on behalf of his wife to a level that I think is pretty troubling. You know, he continues to make statements that aren’t supported by the facts, whether it’s about my record of opposition to the war in Iraq, or our approach to organizing in Las Vegas.

“You know, this has become a habit. And one of the things that I think we’re going to have to do is to directly confront Bill Clinton when he’s not making statements that are factually accurate.”

In recent weeks Bill Clinton has traveled around the country “raging” on behalf of his wife, and accused the Obama campaign of an ever increasing number of “dirty tricks” both real and imagined.

You have to appreciate the irony of the Clinton machine accusing someone else of dirty tricks. When it comes to dirty tricks the Clinton political machine is the “Karl Rove” of the Democratic party.

In a King Day interview that aired on NBC’s “Today” Show on Monday Bill Clinton placed his foot firmly in his mouth once again when he said this:

The former president said Martin Luther King “would get a kick out of the fact that it appears the nominee of the Democratic Party would either be an African-American senator who’s profoundly eloquent, or a woman senator who got her Methodist youth minister to take her to see Dr. King when she was a young high school student, who shared his lifelong commitment and who idolized him.”

MLK day doesn’t have to be a competition to see which candidate loves Dr. King more, or who loved him first and for how many years.

Bill really needs to dial it back a bit before he does some serious damage to his wife’s campaign. I think it’s time to hire a nice young intern to occupy some of the former President’s time.

Every minute he spends teaching a young intern about the “politics of pile-on” is a minute he’s not on the campaign trail raising hell.
