Congressman Tom Lantos of California has died. Lantos was the only Holocaust survivor ever to serve in Congress.

Lantos, D-Calif., announced last month that he had been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus.

The timing of the diagnosis was a particular blow because Lantos had assumed his committee chairmanship just a year earlier, when Democrats retook control of Congress.

Lantos was elected to Congress in 1980.

He was a senior member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

As the only Holocaust survivor ever elected to Congress, Lantos was the founding co-chairman of the 24-year-old Congressional Human Rights Caucus.
