Germ Warfare Suspected In Sales Of African Monkeys To Iran

by Chris Jones on July 7, 2008 · 1 comment

Iran is apparently buying large quantities of endangered Vervet monkeys for a secretive lab. This species of monkey is used around the world for testing cosmetics, vaccines, and biological weapons.

The size of the monkeys requested by Iran are not appropriate for testing vaccines. Therefore, there is some speculation that the monkeys are being used for a secret bio-weapons program. It’s certainly not far-fetched to imagine Iran having a secret bio-weapons program. Iraq had one and other countries in the Middle East have dabbled with biological agents as well.

However, I think the Times Online is jumping to conclusions on this story for now. We know Iran has a covert nuclear program and we should focus our attention on that until more evidence can be gathered about possible bio-weapons.
