Only a racist thinks “tar baby” is a racist term. What are you a moron? Or just a partisan hack?
Tar-Baby was a doll made of tar and turpentine, used to entrap Br’er Rabbit in the second of the Uncle Remus stories. The more that Br’er Rabbit fought the Tar-Baby, the more entangled he became. In contemporary usage, “tar baby” refers to any “sticky situation” that is only aggravated by additional contact. The only way to solve such a situation is by separation.
Thanks to Bryan for that explanation of the term. I am sick of people, all people, who are ready to take offense at the drop of that hat. Is that term offensive to anyone? Maybe hat makers.
There are two groups of people who do this I think. One, those who take fake offense in order to create controversy and limit real conversations. The other are those people who do not bother to learn language, discover the context of peoples remarks or research issues. Both make me ill. They both make the possibility of real debate and constructive change unlikely.
I agree, I don’t think he meant it in a racist fashion at all. But I can guarantee you if a conservative had said it, it would the top story on the news.
Are you kidding? We had a Dallas city commissioner object in a meeting to the phrase “black hole”. I guarantee if any white person used the phrase “tar baby” down here they’d be crucified.
Wow, so, tar baby is no longer a racist term? Let me tell Don Imus that’s one term he can use to refer to someone black where he won’t get into any trouble. Kerry shocks me with some of the things he says. I see more racism coming from him and other members of the Democratic party than I do the Republicans (and remember how half the Democratic party was told they were racist because they supported Hillary and not Barack).
Tar baby was _never_ a racist term, sydney. Bryan explained that in the first post.
I just wish all these ignorant blackguards would fall into a black hole. I mean, when it started Obama was the dark horse in this race. Now his campaign is way in the black, unlike that of Hillary.
People who claim “tar baby” is racist are just an example of the pot calling the kettle black, and it’s a dark day in history when they have their way. But it’s always darkest before the dawn, and maybe it’s not as black as it’s been painted. I’m ever the optimist, though many say I’m just whistling in the dark.
