Bin Laden’s Driver Given Disgracefully Light Sentence

August 7, 2008 · Filed Under Legal News, War on Terror

It looks likes smoking or selling marijuana can get you a longer sentence than working for Al-Qaeda and being caught on the battlefield with surface-to-air missiles in your trunk.

A military jury gave Osama bin Laden’s driver a stunningly lenient sentence on Thursday, making him eligible for release in just five months despite the prosecutors’ request for a sentence tough enough to frighten terrorists around the globe.

Salim Hamdan’s sentence of 5 1/2 years, including five years and a month already served at Guantanamo Bay, fell far short of the 30 years to life that prosecutors wanted. It now goes for mandatory review to a Pentagon official who can shorten the sentence but not extend it.

If this is all we’re gonna do to terrorists like Hamden then why the dog and pony show? Why go through all the Supreme Court nonsense and trials if all we’re going to do is let these people out?

As careful as Osama bin Laden is about who he allows in to his circle, it’s absurd to believe that he didn’t know his driver very well. Hamden was and is a member of Al-Qaeda who’s as responsible as Bin Laden himself for 9/11 and all related attacks.
