Texas School District Will Allow Teachers To Carry Guns

August 15, 2008 · Filed Under Gun Control

It looks like a Texas school district will be first in the nation to finally take a common sense approach to school shootings. Rather than allow students to be lambs waiting to be slaughtered by a crazed gunman, teachers in one tiny Texas town will be able to intervene.

A tiny Texas school district may be the first in the nation to allow teachers and staff to pack guns for protection when classes begin later this month, a newspaper reported.

Trustees at the Harrold Independent School District approved a district policy change last October so employees can carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings, provided the gun-toting teachers follow certain requirements.

In order for teachers and staff to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations and have to use ammunition that is designed to minimize the risk of ricochet in school halls.

Superintendent David Thweatt said the small community is a 30-minute drive from the sheriff’s office, leaving students and teachers without protection. He said the district’s lone campus sits 500 feet from heavily trafficked U.S. 287, which could make it a target.

“When the federal government started making schools gun-free zones, that’s when all of these shootings started. Why would you put it out there that a group of people can’t defend themselves? That’s like saying ’sic ‘em’ to a dog,” Thweatt said in Friday’s online edition of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

It’s at times likes this that I’m most proud of being a Texan. Every law abiding citizen should have the right to defend his or herself in America. So called “gun free zones” are absurd, because then the only person with a gun is the crazed lunatic.

Had a teacher had a gun at Virginia Tech, it’s very unlikely that lunatic would have been able to murder 31 people before killing himself. The idea is to at the very least stop a school shooting from turning into a double-digit blood bath.

I think this action is Bull$hit!
Some teachers should not even be in a teachers position let alone carry a gun.
I was in a school doing business and ran across a socluded area of the school(less occupied) and came across a teacher threatening elementary students with a baseball bat<-I stood in the shadow observing his actions, waving the bat in the childrens faces as he scolded them for missbehaving. after this went on for 5 mins. I made my presence known, he immediately hid the bat. i turned him in the a higher ranking and found out this wwas not the first time he was cought threatening children. So I see no point in a teacher carrying a weapon. The laws state no firearms will be held by a non athority representative official. If teachers are going to start carrying weapons within a private/public setting, then maybe the parents should be able to aswell. But thats not going to happen, so since a teacher is not a regognized police agency and they resign within the realms of a NO gun carry zone, they should not be able to carry a gun. I would not trust another person around my child while they were carrying a handgun or weapon.

    Gothic Ministries,
After reading your post, I am finding it hard to believe that you have ever been to a school. The fact that your spelling and grammar are atrocious aside, your facts are inaccurate. In the Great State of Texas, as in some 48 other states, you don’t have to be an “athority representative official” to carry a handgun. You are required to get 12 hours of training about the pertinent laws and to qualify at the range to be licensed.

Schools in Texas, as in the rest of the country, are “Gun Free Zones”. Elementary, Middle, and High Schools are probably not the place for guns. The purpose of carrying and firearm is to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your property. It is not reasonable to expect teachers to be capable of assuming the responsibility of defending their students in a critical dynamic situation.

However, college campuses are an entirely different situation. Everyone there is assumed to be a responsible adult; who, if licensed should be permitted to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights and defend themselves, if needed.

    Michael,
Thank you for your insult. It is funny that people feel the need to belittle others for a few misspelled words. I find your kind to be a bit egotistical.
About the topic, you stated>assumed adult<
No one should be assumed an adult just by age.
Most of society is in some sort of retardation state of mind and could not handle a situation if it were presented to them let alone be able to carry a weapon of destruction.
Heaven forbid if your are able to carry, lol.
What will people like yourself do when Government over rules the whole carrying rights for the people, lol, and it might happen.
People like yourself sitting and crying out for your so called pathetic rights.
If you also look at some statistics even those in protecting those rights are also sometimes punished. The whole point is, dont sit and cry about rights, I think people are real pussies for feeling the need to carry a weapon, what happened to hand to hand combat, lol…
    Good day.

Oh and BTW Michael, you stated about that dumb gun course, maybe people should have phsycological testing before granted that right to carry.
Wow, they get to be trained to handle and load a gun, they are tested on situations, big doodoo.
They do background checks, waves finger around, lol.
Try phsycological testing to see more if one has the mental capcity to carrry a weapon of destruction.
Michael oh you impress me so much I just feel the need to be like yourself, lol
I do not need to carry a weapon, your a real pussy/cat.
