Video: Colin Powell Endorses Barack Obama

As Michelle points out, it is a little strange that Powell could be so comfortable endorsing a candidate with such dangerous and dimwitted views on Iraq. Views that Powell himself has criticized as the wrong way to proceed.

Case in point:

I have a huge amount of respect for Gen. Powell and honestly value his opinion. The way the Bush administration pushed him out when he was the only guy with real experience on the ground in Iraq was monumentally stupid.

Having said that, Powell’s endorsement doesn’t make any sense. I get that he’s furious over the way the Bush administration treated him, and by extension the Republican party. However, it’s inconceivable that a distinguished military man like Powell could support a left-winger like Barack Obama.

Regardless of his rhetoric, Obama is a no friend of the military. He’s a peacenik who’s spent his entire adult life surrounding himself with Commie Pinkos like Bill Ayres.

Barack Obama is the most liberal candidate ever to run for President. If he wins he’ll be backed up by the most liberal Congress in the history of America.

Say it ain’t so, General.

Powell’s endorsement of Obama does not verify Obama’s judgement, but rather brings Powell’s judgement into question. Powell says that Obama is ready to lead … WHY? … Regardless of Powell’s last minute endorsement, Obama is still the most liberal senator in congress … who accomplished nothing in his meager 3 years in office, except voting present 160 times, and campaigning for President, as well as associating with anti-American racists and domestic terrorists … and, taking America down the road to socialism. Obama betrayed a friendship of 20 years, for personal ambition. Powell betrayed his friendship with McCain. McCain did not betray his fellow prisoners, even during 5 years of torture. These facts speak volumes about who these men really are, and whether or not we can trust them.

    Chris,

Maybe you need to look a little deeper and ask yourself how Gen. Powell arrived at his decision. Clearly, if you look at his statements on Meet the Press, they were heart felt yet well reasoned. It truly pained him to do so.
I think you are totally wrong about Obama. Far from being the creature of left-wing liberals, I think he is a centerist and a pragmatist. Besides, sometimes the “wings” of one party or another become so damaged (as the Democratic Party did in the late 60s and 70s) that you need to trust in the process and send a strong message to them (in this case the Republicans)that they are out of step with mainstream America.

Hope you think more about this Chris, listen to General Powell’s statement again. (I’ve listened to it in full at least twice). I don’t think the association with Mr. Ayers is as big a deal as you have been led to believe. My God, Ambassador Ananburg served on that board with Mr. Ayers as did several other prominent Republicans. Don’t fall for the understandable spin of a campaign out of control.

    Good luck Chris.

    Mich,

I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. I agree with you that Powell sounded like he put a lot of thought into what he said. I don’t mean to suggest he was being disingenuous, just that he’s wrong.

I understand that you think he’s a pragmatist and all that. I wish I could believe that. However, absolutely nothing in his past suggests that to be the case.

Literally from the time he became a community organizer in Chicago until he decided to run for president, he’s surrounded himself exclusively with the most left-wing fringe elements of society.

The fact that Ayres is an unrepentant terrorist is not even the issue. The issue is that Ayres is a lunatic with insane views about education and this country in general. Obama helped him fund his radical education agenda in Chicago, which means he shares the same radical beliefs about education. I cannot imagine even standing in the same room with a despicable character like Ayres.

I also understand what you’re saying about sending a strong message to the GOP about being out of step. I don’t deny that the GOP as a party has gone awry in the last few years. However, sending a message by electing Barack Obama is not in the cards.

There will be no going back if Obama is elected with the support of a liberal congress. The nanny state policies they’ll pass will do irreversible damage to this country.

An Obama administration along with Pelosi and Reid controlled super majorities in Congress will be a secular progressive’s wet dream.

Having said that, If Obama does win I’m willing to stand behind him as our new President(as I would any President). I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for a little while to see how he governs.

Thanks again for leaving thoughtful and constructive comments.
