johnmurtha thumb John Murtha Dead At 77

Rep. John Murtha was the living embodiment of everything that is wrong with Washington and he should have retired 20 years ago or perhaps gone to prison. Having said that, unlike the left I don’t celebrate the deaths of my political adversaries.

For all his corrupt dealings both alleged and factual, Murtha was still a patriot. He gave a lot of good years to the Marine Corps and served honorably in the rice patties of Vietnam between 1966-1967.

Read Murtha’s obit in the WaPo.

My prayers are with his family and friends.

What an idiotic and largely uneducated comment. Congressman Murtha was never indicted or tried for any corrupt activities including Abscam. When you are in politics as long as Murtha was you will attract those who want to bring you down it’s as simple as that. Congressman Murtha lived to be a champion of the blue collar worker and his advance the needs of his constituents from Western Pa. He was an example of a hard working patriotic hero. Born into poverty, not opportunity and wealth,, Murtha delivered newspapers like many young men did at the time. He was a Marine who fought bravely in Vietnam and earned a Bronz star and 2 purple hearts. He received his secondary education through the GI bill at the University of Pittsburgh and never forgot his alma mater doing all hie could to raise money for scholarships. As a political science major at Pitt,I had the honor to work for him as his Congressional intern during the summer of 1979. He was always very kind to me although strict in the way he wanted things done. He was well prepared for every major vote and always looked out for his constituents. Working for him that summer taught me more about the way our government actually functions than all my political science courses combined. When the Democrats honored then President Jimmy Carter at a 1979 Congressional dinner tickets were impossible to find, yet Congressman Murtha gave me his ticket so that I could experience a rare opportunity to meet many people from Capital Hill but most importantly President Carter. It was an extremely generous and selfless act and has left an impression on me to this day. God Bless him and his family.

“champion of the blue collar worker” i.e. shill for corrupt labor unions. I agree with you that he “looked out for his constituents” I don’t think anyone would argue with that. He was hands down the king of pork.

Since the man just passed away I’m not interested in listing all his faults. I don’t doubt he was a nice fellow to know and work with personally, but he was nevertheless corrupt.
