Let me first say that I’m no fan of Rick Santorum so this has nothing to do with partisan politics for me. It has to do with basic human decency. Alan Colmes doesn’t like the way Rick Santorum grieved for his baby that died two hours after being born back in 1996.

“The childbirth in 1996 was a source of terrible heartbreak — the couple were told by doctors early in the pregnancy that the baby Karen was carrying had a fatal defect and would survive only for a short time outside the womb. According to Karen Santorum’s book, ‘Letters to Gabriel: The True Story of Gabriel Michael Santorum,’ she later developed a life-threatening intrauterine infection and a fever that reached nearly 105 degrees. She went into labor when she was 20 weeks pregnant. After resisting at first, she allowed doctors to give her the drug Pitocin to speed the birth. Gabriel lived just two hours.

What happened after the death is a kind of snapshot of a cultural divide. Some would find it discomforting, strange, even ghoulish — others brave and deeply spiritual. Rick and Karen Santorum would not let the morgue take the corpse of their newborn; they slept that night in the hospital with their lifeless baby between them. The next day, they took him home. ‘Your siblings could not have been more excited about you!’ Karen writes in the book, which takes the form of letters to Gabriel, mostly while he is in utero. ‘Elizabeth and Johnny held you with so much love and tenderness.’ Elizabeth proudly announced to everyone as she cuddled you, ‘This is my baby brother, Gabriel; he is an angel.’ ”

I will admit it’s a little strange. I Don’t know that I would have done that. However, who’s to say what’s strange or appropriate when dealing with the death of a baby? Who am I to say Rick Santorum is “crazy” because of that? That is a deeply personal issue that has no place in a political discussion. Hatred for Rick Santorum runs deep among liberals. There is plenty of red meat for attacking him without going there.

So here’s Alan having a meltdown after Rich Lowry calls him out for his attack on Santorum.

This is a great clip. The audience cheers after everything Ann says, and they boo Scott McClellan. I still can’t believe Scott the weasel can show his face in public after what he did to president Bush. Scott is a scumbag and Ann calls his ass out!

HuffPo is reporting that Alan Colmes will be leaving Hannity & Colmes at the end of the year. Colmes says he will remain with Fox News as a liberal commentator, and will soon unveil his own weekend program on the channel. In addition, Alan will continue hosting his radio program on Fox News Radio.

“I approached Bill Shine (FNC’s Senior Vice President of Programming)
earlier this year about wanting to move on after 12 years to develop
new and challenging ways to contribute to the growth of the network,”
Colmes said. “Although it’s bittersweet to leave one of the longest
marriages on cable news, I’m proud that both Sean (Hannity) and I
remained unharmed after sitting side by side, night after night for so
many years.”

Sean Hannity had this to say about the split:

“Not only has Alan been a remarkable co-host, he’s been a great friend
which is rare in this industry — I’ll genuinely miss sparring with
such a skillful debate partner.”

Now the big question is who will replace Alan as the liberal half of Hannity & Colmes? It will be interesting to see if they choose someone from within Fox like Lanny Davis or Howard Wolfson, or if they plan to bring in new talent.

Even though I rarely agree with Alan, I think his part of the show is very important. I’m a big Hannity fan, but Sean has to have someone on the show to counter him. A little Hannity can go a long way depending on the topic being discussed. I’d like to see someone who’s as equally fierce an advocate from the left as Sean is from the right.

What makes Fox News the best cable news channel on television is the fact that you really do get to hear both sides. Unlike liberals, I actually enjoy hearing views I disagree with. Debate is a healthy thing. Debate is something you will never see on MSNBC. Unless it’s a debate between Matthews and Olbermann over who loves Barack Obama more.

Alan Colmes has a great piece on his blog about why liberals are completely wrong to demonize Fox News. He wrote it in response to the shrill protests coming from the liberal blogs about Clinton guru Howard Wolfson being hired by Fox News.

Often quoted is a four-year-old poll that claims that only 7 percent of Fox viewers supported John Kerry, while 88 percent were for Bush.  That’s the argument?  Other, more thorough studies show very different results.  Mediamark research shows that only 38% of FOX viewers self-identify as conservatives. Pew Research has numbers that fall somewhere in-between citing a survey that shows Republicans outnumber Democrats by two-to-one (43% to 21%) among the core FOX News Channel audience

But even if the 88%-7% figures were a true reflection of the FOX News viewership (and J$ explains why it isn’t), one would think that progressives would welcome the opportunity to change the paradigm and welcome any move by FOX to live up to its “Fair and Balanced” mantra.  I am often renounced by the same liberal blogophere of which I am a part (even on this, my own, site, as free speech reigns) simply for being a part of a news organization some progressives disdain.  So they’d rather just cede the ground, have no one on the left appear on the channel, and then continue to bash it. When I criticized Democrats for not participating in a FOX News debate, I was especially excoriated by Kos and others on the left, accused of being a mouthpiece for my FOX bosses…

I’ve found that most people who hate Fox News have never actually watched it. They simply hate FNC because their favorite liberal blog tells them to. Fox unquestionably had the fairest coverage during the primaries. They were the only channel that played it right down the middle. The other channels, MSNBC in particular was pretty much just an extension of the Obama campaign. They continue to be his unofficial media arm for all intents and purposes, and its disgusting.
