There are two givens in any election campaign: 1) the candidates will make grand promises that they can never keep and 2) they will pander to their audience at every opportunity.

But on Wednesday, Newt “grandiose is my middle name” [it isn't] Gingrich took those truisms on to a whole new, extraplanetary level. Speaking to an audience on Florida’s Space Coast ahead of the state’s primary next week, the big-thinking Republican hopeful turned his science fiction fantasies into a hard and fast campaign promise.

“By the end of my second term we will have the first permanent base on the moon and it will be American,” he said. According to Talking Points Memo Gingrich went on to say that the base would be used for “science, tourism, and manufacturing” and to create a “robust industry” modelled on the airline business in the 20th century.

And from there, how could a president ever top that? Well, that would be a mission to Mars obviously, said Gingrich – or Newt Lightyear as my colleague Richard Adams has now dubbed him.

Some reporters in the room undoubtedly would have known that they were witnesses to a historic moment: Gingrich finally losing his mind. But that’s not how Newt saw things, according to Andrew Kaczynski from Buzzfeed Politics.

Of course, Newt has aired his space musings in public before. In December, he defended his policy in favour of lunar mining during one of the live televised debates. Then of course there are his repeated warnings over the dangers to America from an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) caused by a nuclear warhead detonating in space.

By all accounts, Gingrich’s promise drew huge applause on the Space Coast. On Twitter, a far more forbidding place at the best of times, the response was more sceptical. The Guardian’s Ana Marie Cox immediately raised one obvious drawback:

Philip Klein, of the Washington Examiner, was slightly more charitable.

But while the small-minded, earthbound mainstream media may mock, Gingrich can be sure of one thing. If he can pull off a feat as unlikely as winning the Republican nomination, beating Obama in November and going on to secure a second term, anything is possible.

The Florida Supreme Court has ruled that Governor Rick Scott can reject high-speed rail funds from the federal government.

Scott had decided to decline high-speed rail funds for a Tampa to Orlando line and two state legislators sued him.

This is a victory for fiscal sanity. Democrats have a sexual fetish for trains and I’m not sure why. No one wants to ride them, but Democrats keep wanting to build them.

This is some of the most hair raising video I’ve ever seen. A gunman takes over a school board meeting in Florida. Superintendent Bill Husfelt tried to reason with him but the man eventually just opens fire.

There is  no question that God intervened in this situation. I have the same pistol the gunman used and I can tell you he should not have missed. At that range with that big of a target, Bill Husfelt should be a dead man.

America’s most despicable Congressman, Alan Grayson, has been badly defeated by Republican Daniel Webster in Florida. Webster beat that piece of shit by a margin of 56% to 38%.

When Grayson said Republicans wanted sick people to “die quickly” — he could’ve been speaking about his political career.

Fox News just announced Marco Rubio has won in Florida Senate race!

CNN hosted a live debate tonight for the Florida governor’s race. During a commercial break, Democrat Alex Sink was caught cheating!

Rick Scott called her out on live television! IT WAS AWESOME.

Immediately after the debate, Sink fired the staffer who cheated with her.

Sarah Palin spoke to the press outside NewsMax in Florida. She gave a plug to Pam Bondi, Allen West, and Marco Rubio.

Palm Beach State College apparently doesn’t like opposing points of view very much (shocking, I know). A left-wing administrator noticed that Young Americans For Freedom had a recruitment table at the club rush like dozens of other organizations did. She immediately called campus police and had them thrown out. YAF says the administrator didn’t like what the group was saying about Obama’s economic policies and so she took revenge.

I wish I could say I’m surprised by this, but I’m not. Conservatives have to fight tooth and nail on college campuses simply for the right to be heard. Fortunately, I think the conservative message is beginning to break through to young people.

This is good. Jeb Bush tries to resist criticizing Charlie Crist, but just can’t do it. Crist’s support of the phony stimulus is just too egregious. I couldn’t agree more.
