The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Monday to rule on a politically charged law in Arizona targeting illegal immigrants.

The Washington Times:

An illegal-immigrant student in Texas who committed suicide the day after Thanksgiving left letters saying he felt trapped by his lack of opportunities and, according to his family, he “decided to sacrifice himself for the cause.”

High school senior Joaquin Luna, 18, put on a suit, kissed family members, went into the bathroom and shot himself Friday, according to his brother, Diyer Mendoza. In the letters he left, his brother said, Lunaexpressed despair at the chances for the federal Dream Act, which would legalize illegal-immigrant students and young adults.

Suffice it to say it’s always a tragedy when someone commits suicide, but I have major problems with this story. This guy clearly suffered from mental health issues. I’m not sure The Dream Act really had a lot to do with it. Committing suicide because America won’t give you amnesty is not a rational act.

Secondly, how exactly is his death a “sacrifice for the cause?” Was his death supposed to make me change my mind on The Dream Act? If anything, it makes me even more against it. We don’t need people in this country who get suicidal when they don’t get their way. I also don’t accept the premise that he felt trapped by “lack of opportunities.” Are you kidding me? Obama has bent over backwards looking for ways to avoid deportation. As long as they don’t live in Arizona, illegal aliens have nothing to worry about. Gov. Perry will even see to it that illegals get a college education.

Joaquin Luna didn’t suffer from a lack of citizenship. He suffered from a lack of sanity.

During the last GOP debate Rick Perry said Conservatives who don’t support in-state tuition for illegal aliens are “heartless.” He’s of course very sorry he said that.

Manuel Guerra — A 27-year old illegal alien student from Mexico.He’s also a leading activist for the failed amnesty program known as the DREAM Act. It looks like Manuel got his amnesty anyway.

Sujey Pando — A lesbian illegal alien from Mexico (amnesty + diversity = utopia) who is married to an American woman. The federal government doesn’t recognize same sex marriages, but will consider Pando “family” and and therefore grant her amnesty.

The NY Slimes Times has a front page story heralding Obama’s decision to grant up to 2.4 million illegal aliens amnesty by decree. Michelle Malkin has a few things to say about it as well.

President Obama spoke to radical Latino group La Raza this morning. He spoke of being “tempted” to do things on his own and “not just on immigration reform.”

“The idea of doing things on my own is very tempting. I promise you, not just on immigration reform. But that’s not how our system works. That’s not how our democracy functions. That’s not how our Constitution is written,” Obama said at the National Council of La Raza’s annual conference.

He went on to say he needed a “dance partner” to get amnesty for illegal aliens immigration reform passed. Obama encouraged the militant Latino group to keep building a movement outside Washington. One “they” can’t stop. I assume by “they” he means the American people.

“Let’s be honest, I need a dance partner here, and the floor is empty,” he added, referring to the need for bipartisan congressional support to pass an immigration reform measure.

Members of the audience responded by chanting, “Yes you can, yes you can.”

“I need you to keep building a movement for change outside of Washington, one they can’t stop, one that’s greater than this community,” Obama told them.

Immigration activists (open border agitators) are angry with Obama because he pledged during his campaign to pass immigration reform. Frankly, I don’t know what they’re so pissed about. He and our rogue Attorney General have been working on the back end to ensure only the worst people are deported. If you don’t commit murder and stay out of Arizona you can pretty much rest easy if you’re an illegal alien from Mexico .

Liberal Democrat Rep. Luis Gutierrez gave a shrill speech in which he demanded that Obama install immigration “reform” by executive order. He used the same old tired canards to describe why must have “reform” now. He talked about kids coming home to find their illegal alien parents missing. He talked of neighborhoods being “terrorized” by ICE.

President Obama took questions today at a town hall event in Washington, DC sponsored by the Spanish language channel Univision. A student asked the president a question via Skype. She announced that she was an illegal alien student and held up a deportation letter to the camera. She wanted to know why “people like her” were still getting letters like that even though Obama promised that immigration enforcement had changed.

Obama essentially told her we’re no longer targeting people like you. We’re only interested in deporting “criminals.” But for folks who are in school and “doing all the right things” (except for sneaking into the country) we want you to succeed.

“We have redesigned our enforcement practices under the law to make sure that we’re focusing primarily on criminals, and so our deportation of criminals are up about 70 percent. Our deportation of non-criminals are down, and that’s because we want to focus our resources on those folks who are destructive to the community.

“And for a young person like that young woman that we just spoke to who’s going to school, doing all the right things, we want them to succeed,” Obama said.

Through his answer, the President of The United States announced to every Spanish speaking person on earth that if you sneak in here and get in school we’ll help you succeed. Yeah, that sounds like a good way to secure the border. I’m sure illegal crossings are going to fall dramatically after that. Nice going, Hussein.

I also don’t appreciate Obama speaking for everyone. He wants illegal aliens to succeed. I want illegal aliens to be deported until such time as they get their papers in order and comes across legally. When that happens then I too will want them succeed. I resent the notion that people who sneak into this country have some kind of right to be here. They do not.

“The Dream Act” would be a disaster for this nation the likes of which we have never seen.

Michelle Malkin posted this disturbing clip today. A UCLA professor speaking at a DREAM Act rally offers an ominous note of encouragement. He says once illegals win passage of the DREAM Act it will allow them to become educated and eventually replace the “old white guys” in Congress.

This is the kind of rhetoric that makes the immigration issue so contentious. The hard left has hijacked the issue to use for nefarious purposes. The left doesn’t care about giving opportunity to immigrants. They’re using immigrants as pawns in their quest to permanently change the electorate in their favor.

This is why I love Michelle Malkin. There’s nobody who can write a pithier or more biting blog post than Michelle. Here’s her update on the status of the DREAM Act.

The Senate just voted 59-40 to table the DREAM Act illegal alien bailout cloture vote. It’s been “vitiated,” to use Senate parlance. They’ll take up the House-passed version next week.

Which means another week of open-borders agitation, radical ethnic tribalism, and new Democrat euphemisms for illegal aliens.

It’s also another week for you to re-double phone calls, faxes and e-mails to Washington and demand that they put law-abiding American workers and students — and law-abiding immigrants and visa applicants — first.

The part in bold is my favorite. It’s so true. Well played, Michelle.

Republicans now firmly control Texas at every level. As a result, the first bill introduced for the 2011 legislative session was an Arizona style immigration bill.

Less than an hour after the period began for filing bills for consideration in the 2011 Legislative session, State Rep. Debbie Riddle (R-Tomball), a leader of the newly muscular conservatives in the Legislature, filed an ‘Arizona style’ measure that would crack down on illegal immigration…

So-called “sanctuary cities” will no longer be tolerated either:

Riddle’s measure would also deny all state funds to any community which declares itself a ‘sanctuary city’ and refuses to aggressively enforce immigration laws.

As a Texan, nothing makes me happier than this:

Republicans will hold 99 of the 150 seats in the Texas House when the biennial session is gaveled into order January 11th, the largest GOP majority in the Texas House in 140 years.  The conservative landslide last week is expected to result in several measures on the conservative wish list which have been killed by Democrats and moderate Republicans being passed in the coming legislature.

In addition to the healthy majority in the Texas House, Republicans will still control almost 2/3 of the seats in the 31 member State Senate, as well as Republicans in control of all statewide elected offices.

2011 is gonna be a good year.
