Newt Gingrich congratulated opponents Rick Santorum and Ron Paul for likely finishes before him in the Iowa caucuses Tuesday, but was mum on strongest challenger Mitt Romney.

Fox News is reporting that Mitt Romney has been declared the winner of the Iowa caucuses. He won by 8 votes.

Iowa Republican Party Chairman Matt Strawn says Mitt Romney wins the Iowa caucuses by eight votes.

Rick Santorum doesn’t quite have it in the bag in Iowa as he remains virtually tied with Mitt Romney for first place. Only 4 votes are separating them. But the fact that Santorum came out of nowhere to tie for first with Mitt Romney is a very big deal. He’s going to have real momentum coming out of Iowa. But it remains to be seen if he can compete with Romney’s war chest and ground game.

With all that said, Rick Santorum gave a damn good victory speech in Iowa. Take a look!

Right now as of 12:57am there is exactly 4 votes separating Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum in the Iowa caucuses. Fox News just reported that moments ago. This is one of the closest contests in modern political history. The article linked reflects an 18 vote gap in the contest, but that has since narrowed to just 4 votes. They are essentially tied for first place.

Newt Gingrich says he doesn’t expect to win Tuesday’s Iowa caucuses after being battered by millions of dollars in negative ads.
