Pakistan will return the wreckage of the US special forces helicopter used in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden as a tentative first step towards hitting the reset button in their badly damaged relations.

Senator John Kerry announced the offer in Islamabad after 24 hours of meetings with Pakistan’s military and civilian leadership amid deep mutual mistrust and recriminations since Bin Laden’s killing on 2 May.

The US feared cutting-edge military technology in the tail of the helicopter, abandoned after US forces blew up the rest of the craft, could be reverse-engineered in China.

A joint statement following the talks reported “a constructive exchange of views” – diplomatic speak for tough-talking – but also an agreement to work together against “high value targets”. It was not clear if these targets included the Taliban leader Mullah Omar or al-Qaida’s number two, Ayman al-Zawahiri, both of whom are believed to be in Pakistan.

Kerry, considered the “good cop” of US diplomacy with Islamabad, stressed the “extraordinary” nature of the mission that killed Bin Laden, saying it had been kept secret for operational reasons and not due to US mistrust of Pakistan. This claim contradicted earlier comments by the CIA chief, Leon Panetta, that Pakistani intelligence (ISI) had been excluded in case someone tipped off the al-Qaida leader.

“This had to be an American operation, and it had to be as secure as humanly possible,” he said. But he stopped short of alleging Pakistani complicity with Bin Laden, saying there was “no evidence at this point in time”.

The deal comes amid growing anti-American anger inside Pakistan, which on Friday passed a motion condemning the US raid and calling for a complete review of the relationship with the US, including potentially cutting Nato’s supply line to Afghanistan.

A senior Pakistani military official told the Guardian the raid had sparked vivid anti-American sentiment inside the armed forces, and that General Kayani had faced anger during a tour of military bases last week. There were also questions about the poor perfomance of the ISI, the official said, but rejected suggestions that agency personnel had helped Bin Laden.

Instead, he suggested, the US needed to make major concessions to rebuild the relationship including, he said, a nuclear cooperation deal similar to the one between Washington and India. But there are few signs that the US will make any concessions, with Kerry also under pressure from US senators who want to slash aid to Pakistan or cut relations entirely.

Republican Senator Jim DeMint is taking on the Obama administration’s outrageous Honduras policy. John Kerry attempted to stop DeMint from taking a trip to Honduras, but DeMint gave him a swift kick in the tookus.

Kudos to DeMint for raising a stink over Honduras. It’s disgraceful that President Obama chooses dictators over democracy.

John Kerry and Barbara Boxer have an Op-Ed in today’s Washington Post rebutting Sarah Palin’s piece in last week’s WaPo attacking Cap and Trade.

Here’s a little taste of their stupidity:

Palin argues that "the answer doesn’t lie in making energy scarcer and more expensive!" The truth is, clean energy legislation doesn’t make energy scarcer or more expensive; it works to find alternative solutions to our costly dependence on foreign oil and provides powerful incentives to pursue cutting-edge clean energy technologies.

Palin asserts that job losses are "certain." Wrong. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and American Clean Energy and Security legislation will create significant employment opportunities across the country in a broad array of sectors linked to the clean energy economy. Studies at the federal level and by states have demonstrated clean energy job creation. A report by the Center for American Progress calculated that $150 billion in clean energy investments would create more than 1.7 million domestic and community-based jobs that can’t be shipped overseas.

Kerry and Boxer are living in the land of Oz. The left doesn’t give a damn about “breaking our dependence on foreign oil” they don’t want us to depend on any oil. They’re using phony climate change as an excuse to gain a vice-like grip on every aspect of our lives.

If Kerry and Boxer really gave a damn about ending out dependence on foreign oil they would let us use our own oil. They would allow us to build more nuclear plants and experiment with oil shale. They would allow off-shore drilling, drilling in ANWR, and drilling anywhere else we have oil.

We have a enough oil, natural gas, and nuclear potential to be completely self-sustaining if we really wanted to be. But that’s not what this is about. It’s about environmental extremism and phony science being used as a rationale for stopping human development and destroying our country.

John Kerry and Barbara Boxer are nothing but contemptible jerks who should be thrown out of office.

Helicopters carrying three senior U.S. senators made emergency landings Thursday in the mountains of Afghanistan because of a snowstorm.

Sens. John Kerry, Joseph Biden and Chuck Hagel were aboard the aircraft. No one was injured, according a statement from Kerry’s office. The senators and their delegation returned to Bagram Air Base in a motor convoy, and have left for Turkey.

“After several hours, the senators were evacuated by American troops and returned overland to Bagram Air Base, and left for their next scheduled stop in Ankara, Turkey,” the Kerry statement said. “Sen. Kerry thanks the American troops, who were terrific as always and who continue to do an incredible job in Afghanistan.”

The lawmakers were on a trip this week that included stops in India, Turkey and Pakistan, where they observed the elections earlier this week.

Kerry and Biden are Democrats from Massachusetts and Delaware, respectively, and the Republican Hagel is from Nebraska.

John Kerry, the Democratic Party’s 2004 nominee for president, took aim at Bill Clinton Friday, telling the National Journal the former president does “not have a license to abuse the truth.”

The Massachusetts senator, who endorsed Barack Obama’s White House bid earlier this month, said Clinton’s criticisms of the Illinois senator have been “over the top,” and suggested the former president is getting “frantic.”

Targeting Clinton’s recent spate of attacks on Obama, Kerry said, “I think you had an abuse of the truth, is what happened. …I mean, being an ex-president does not give you license to abuse the truth, and I think that over the last days it’s been over the top.

“I think it’s very unfortunate, but I think the voters can see through that,” Kerry added. “When somebody’s coming on strong and they are growing, people get a little frantic, and I think people have seen this sort of franticness in the air, if you will.”

It’s quite possible that hell has in fact frozen over, because I actually agree with John Kerry on this one. I don’t think the Clintons realize how much damage they’re actually doing to themselves.

Even Clinton supporters are being reminded of the unpleasant political baggage that comes with a Clinton presidency and I don’t think most of them care to deal with it again.

It’s a simple fact that Bill Clinton is a liar. He lied to his family numerous times about his cheating, he lied under oath about his cheating, he lied about Sandy Berger being forgetful as the reason he stuffed classified documents in his pants.

There’s a list about a mile long of other situations where Bill Clinton has lied. Not the “Bush lied people died” nonsense, but actually really lied.

For his entire political and personal life, Bill Clinton has lied anytime he felt like it. The man doesn’t have any integrity whatsoever, and his recent fibbing about Obama is reminding people about that.

A lot of Democrats are beginning to understand why Republicans dislike the Clintons so much. Bill and Hillary will literally say anything about anyone if it helps them win.

If they had to plant a crack pipe in Obama’s suit jacket in order to win, that’s exactly what they would do.

Politics is an ugly business and obviously there’s going to be heated rhetoric on both sides, but Bill Clinton looks like a jackass running around the country making false statements.

There’s a lot about Obama to be critical of without making stuff up.
