Miley Cyrus and the legendary Joan Jett rocked hard on Oprah earlier this week. Joan Jett sounded bad ass too. If you haven’t seen the movie about Joan Jett called The Runaways you need to.

Miley Cyrus went nuclear on a photographer after he almost knocked her mom down outside a cafe. The paparazzi in this country really are out of control. I can’t believe the way they invade personal space. It’s like getting jumped by a pack of wild dogs. The sick part of this is that Miley’s confrontation with the photographer is going to increase the value of the pictures. It’s a vicious cycle.

This definitely qualifies as the “scandal” of the day. TMZ released a video this morning of Miley Cyrus taking a bong hit of what was assumed to be marijuana.

Miley’s reps are saying it’s actually salvia she’s smoking and not weed. Salvia is a legal herb that causes hallucinogenic effects. Indians use salvia to go on “spirit journeys” or “spirit walks.”

I have to give her publicist credit for coming up with the Salvia excuse. Whatever Miley is paying her I’d say she’s worth every penny.

Obviously, I don’t know what it was. Maybe it really was salvia. But speaking as a 29-year old who wasted more hours than I care to admit smoking weed (purely for medicinal purposes – wink,wink) back in the day I’m skeptical.

Kids don’t just sit around taking bong hits of salvia. Especially kids who run around in Miley’s circle. Marijuana is de-facto legal in California. It’s as easy to get as beer or wine. Also, salvia sucks. It only lasts a few minutes, but can make you completely lose touch with reality. The effects of it are in no way comparable to marijuana.

That said, I don’t really think it’s a big deal if she is smoking weed. I’m certainly not surprised. It’s clear from the video that it’s not something she’s done very often.

I think the bigger scandal here is how someone in Miley’s position could allow herself to be filmed doing that. It’s totally insane. She’s not new to the fame game and should know better. Celebrities are only one video away from disaster, especially the current and former Disney stars like Miley and Demi Lovato.

Miley should not allow filming of any kind at her parties. If that means confiscating cameras, iPhones, and Blackberries at the door then so be it.

There are literally hundreds of millions of dollars at stake. It’s mind blowing that she could be so reckless with her career.

Patriotic displays are a common occurrence in country music, but relatively rare in mainstream pop music (at least prior to Obama). In fact, you’re much more likely to see some kind of anti-American display than any kind of flag waving.

On the other hand, flag waving is exactly what you get in Miley Cyrus’s new video for her hit single “Party In The USA”. It may well be the most pro-American imagery ever witnessed on MTV.

It’s the kind of blatant, unapologetic patriotism that usually comes with a disclaimer in Nancy Pelosi’s district.

Kudos to Miley for making a great record and a great video.

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that Disney is pushing for this duet between Miley and John to be nominated for “Best Original Song” at the upcoming 2009 Academy Awards.

Take a look at this odd Hannah Montana “Concert Candy” discovered by a reader over at DListed. As funny as this is, it’s amazing someone at Disney didn’t pull (no pun intended) the plug on this product before it went out the door. I don’t think Phallic candy is going to help win over hearts and minds still damaged from the scandalous “naked shoulder” incident.
