Rapper Remy Ma Sentenced To 8 Years
Rapper Remy Ma was sentenced to 8 years in prison today for shooting a woman two times in the abdomen outside a Manhattan night club, then fleeing the scene.
The entertainer, whose real name is Remy Smith, had faced up to 25 years in prison for assault, weapon possession and attempted coercion for shooting Makeda Barnes Joseph last July in a dispute over money.
Smith, 26, begged the judge for leniency for the sake of “my little boy,” saying she grew up “surrounded by failure, violence and poverty,” but “made something out of nothing” from her life.
State Supreme Court Justice Rena Uviller said she recognized that Smith had had a difficult childhood, but noted the victim had nearly died and will never be the same physically. Uviller called the rapper “a young woman whose anger is out of control.”
Eight years may seem like a long time, but it’s about time rap artists are held to account for their actions. I’m a huge fan of hip-hop and listen to it every day, but Remy deserved to go to prison.
The woman Remy shot barely survived and according to the Judge will never be the same. Remy is correct when she says she “made something out of nothing” which is what makes this whole case so tragic.
Remy is allegedly a millionaire, but was willing to throw her entire life away and murder someone over $2,000. Let’s make no mistake about it, you don’t shoot someone twice with a .45 caliber pistol in the stomach unless you intend to kill them.
So now Remy’s son will be without a mother for the next 8 years because mommy thought she was living in a Scarface movie instead of the real world.

Rapper Remy Ma Convicted In ‘07 Shooting
Rapper Remy Ma thought a woman in her entourage stole $3,000 from her purse so she pulled out a .45 caliber pistol and shot her outside a nightclub last year.
Remy claimed that she did indeed shoot the woman, but it was accidental. She tried to snatch the woman’s purse from her to see if the missing money was inside and the gun went off during the scuffle.
Naturally, the jury rejected the ridiculous story and found her guilty of intentional assault and several other charges. Remy Ma whose real name is Remy Smith is now facing a maximum of 25 years in prison, but a minimum of 10 years.
Remy Ma maintained an arrogant swagger throughout the trial, wearing flamboyant clothing and acting as if the whole episode was movie and not real life.
The judge wasn’t amused and ordered her to remain in jail until her sentencing later this month. Meaning that Remy Ma has at a minimum 10 years to figure out why she threw her life and career away for $3,000.
Ms. Smith, 26, kept her composure as Justice Rena K. Uviller ordered her jailed until her sentencing next month.
It was only when court officers slammed the heavy door to the courtroom holding cell behind her that she broke down, wailing, “My son! My son!” over and over again. Mr. Fisher said later that Ms. Smith had been so optimistic that she would be acquitted that she had not said goodbye to her 8-year-old son that morning.
Now that’s gangsta!
